Why Hindsight's 2020

Written by Hannah Wallis
7th May 2020

Starting with a polite request, please watch The Great Realisation.

Once you have watched it, I urge you to share it with your friends and family, children included. It beautifully explains why hindsight’s 2020.

On Friday 8th May 2020, our nation will fall silent at 11am for two minutes, to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe. We should look to our Second World War generation to learn from their experiences and continue their work, to protect us all from the threat we currently face.

Too often we let the urgent take precedent over the important, whether in our work or personal life. We answer pressing emails and take phone calls during our lunch break, before resting, eating, and checking on our staff and colleagues. We rush the children through dinner, bath and bedtime before taking a moment to go for a walk together or bake a cake.

Urgent over important is something we all fall foul to and the most common excuse? I didn’t have time.

The restrictions we are currently under have given us a gift. I will always remember this period of 2020 as the moment I was given the gift of time.

Focus on what’s important.

More and more of us are exercising from home, walking the dog, exploring the local countryside or working on home-learning projects when perhaps usually, we are snowed under with deadlines and client demands. Not only that, while focussed on our business, as opposed to working in our business quite as much, we are able to get to the bottom of a to-do list or finish off those ‘just’ jobs. This moment in time is our ‘rainy day’ that we have all been saving tasks until, so get them done.

The main purpose of my email today was two-fold:

  1. To ensure that as many people as possible watch The Great Realisation – I think it is the best thing I have seen/heard/read during this time
  2. Communicate the message: focus on what’s important

Enjoy the long weekend with your families, while respecting all safety measures. Take the time to think about the bravery that was demonstrated 75 years ago and be grateful for the ultimate sacrifice they made. We owe it to them, we owe it to ourselves, we owe it to our futures to take care of this great planet, to remember why hindsight’s 2020 and to focus on what’s important.

Stay safe, stay well.

"An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage".
